The 'labour card' — now essentially a digital work permit — is what allows you to work legally in the UAE's private sector. Here's what it is and how it works.
What it is
The work permit is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation (MOHRE) and authorises a specific employee to work for a specific employer. It has largely moved from a physical 'labour card' to a digital permit linked to your records.
Who needs one
Almost everyone employed in the private sector needs a valid MOHRE work permit, sponsored by their employer. It is separate from — but connected to — your residence visa and Emirates ID.
How it's issued and renewed
- The employer applies for the work permit as part of onboarding.
- It's tied to your employment contract registered with MOHRE.
- It must be renewed in line with your contract and visa.
- Cancellation happens when employment ends, alongside visa cancellation.
Why it matters
Working without a valid permit, or on a permit for a different employer, creates legal risk for both parties. Keeping permits, contracts and records aligned is part of good HR housekeeping.
