Planning around public holidays, the weekend and leave entitlements is part of running a compliant UAE workplace. Here's the framework — with a reminder to check each year's official dates.
Public holidays
Paid public holidays are announced each year by the UAE Cabinet. They typically include:
- New Year's Day (1 January).
- Eid Al Fitr (dates vary with the lunar calendar).
- Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha.
- Islamic (Hijri) New Year.
- Prophet Muhammad's Birthday.
- Commemoration Day (1 December).
- National Day (2–3 December).
Because several of these follow the lunar calendar, the exact dates shift each year and are confirmed by official announcement — always check the current year's holiday calendar.
The weekend
The UAE moved to a Saturday–Sunday weekend for the federal government, with a shorter Friday for many, though private-sector weekends can vary by employer. Confirm your organisation's official rest days.
Main types of leave
- Annual leave — 30 days per year after one year of service.
- Sick leave — up to 90 days on a full/half/unpaid basis after probation.
- Maternity leave — 60 days (45 full pay, 15 half pay).
- Parental, bereavement and study leave — as provided by law and policy.
Keep the calendar accurate
TimeChart's leave management tracks holidays and every leave type against the right pay, and flags coverage gaps before they happen.
